The heart of CHAT is Tutoring, serving Church Hill students since 2002. Each school year, students K-12 receive individual attention through one-on-one tutoring on Monday and Tuesday afternoons.
The program fosters the development of trusted relationships as a tool for focusing on literacy and academics. For the hundreds of students who have participated, Tutoring has been a lifeline to school success and the prospect for a bright future.
It’s our belief that by establishing strong connections through one-on-one tutoring, mentorship, enrichment activities and immersion in a supportive environment, we can teach critical skills and values for living healthy, successful lives.
For this reason, tutoring programs take place in approved and monitored homes around the area, staffed by Site Leaders, trained tutors, mentors and Street Leaders.
Students are assigned tutors based on grade level, academic progress and proximity to tutoring locations. We actively encourage the development of strong connections and ongoing personal relationships, elements that contribute to success and sustained progress.
CHAT has developed a comprehensive literacy program with the goal of getting each child in or above grade level in reading. When schoolwork is completed, and depending on grade level, students work on crafts and other life skills projects.
Tutoring runs from 5:30 – 7 p.m. although students may come as early as 5 p.m. for games, activities and a nutritious snack. About forty-five minutes is devoted to actual one-on-one tutoring.
