It is our hope at CHAT to be continually raising a future generation of indigenous leaders. Leaders that desire to invest time in serving the community, and maybe even work for CHAT one day. One of the ways we are intentionally working toward this goal is through our Street Leader Program. A Street Leader is a middle or high-school student at CHAT selected for their character, leadership potential, and community involvemen. These young people are trained to serve as counselors, coaches, and role models to the youth in the after-school programs and summer camps. Additionally, the Street Leader Program features entrepreneurship opportunities, empowering youth to practice managing a business. Street Leader responsibilities are year- round with increased opportunities for work during the summer time.
- Who is eligible? Middle and high school youth residing in the Church Hill and involved in the life of the community.
- How to apply? CHAT partners with SnagAJob to conduct annual interviews in May to fill the needs for summer Street Leaders. Interested youth are welcome to complete a Street Leader Application and interview for a position. Street Leader positions for the fall and spring are open to interested and deserving summer interns with potential openings filled by other qualified youth.
- Street Leader Responsibilities – Street Leaders are expected to attend a leadership training class, prepare home locations for tutoring, tutor youth, and engage in community service opportunities. See the Street Leader Covenant for more details. For most of our youth, serving as a Street Leader is their first job and they can expect to receive extensive job training and one-on-one mentoring. Street Leader positions are paid positions. The money to pay Street Leaders is made possible through generous donations from a broad range of individuals.
- Entrepreneurship Opportunities – An important goal of the Street Leader program is to build up job skills. We have assisted Street Leaders in creating and operating small businesses during the summer, some of which we are now able to operate year round. Street Leaders have developed a landscaping and lawn mowing business, sewing hand bags and quilts, car detailing, and the sales and production of picnic tables, benches, and corn hole sets.
