So my family is a mediocre camping family. We used to go every year, but when we went, we made sure the place our tents were staked had certain amenities, such as showers, arcades, happy hour for the parents, etc. Then I came to college, and my camping experiences became a little more "woodsy" - my friends and I have camped and hiked in the Shenandoah Valley for our Fall Breaks the past two years. However, nothing I've done has compared with this past weeked, camping in North Carolina with the CHAT kids.
They hit the ground running... and never stopped, until we left. We pitched our tents at Camp Kerr Lake, in Henderson, North Carolina, and it was fantastic. Our site was right by the enormous Kerr Lake, and had so many fun things to do I couldn't count - kids were playing frisbee, tetherball was a weekend favorite, box hockey, soccer, basketball, volleyball - the whole nine yards.
It was wonderful. I still can't get over the fact, however, that the kids insisted on calling the lake "the pool." I didn't recognize this was happening for a while, until I heard it from behind me somewhere... for the longest time I was looking for where the campground had a pool, because I'd have been there in a heartbeat. Then, I recognized that the kids literally thought the lake was a pool.
Or, they couldn't stop themselves from calling it a pool, having probably only swam in pools their whole lives. It was just one more funny moment with the inner city. The kids, on whole, were fantastic throughout the whole trip, which was great. We had some really positive attitudes, and by and large they were all out there to have a good time, and we tried our best to give it to them. Props to Taylor, because she did an awesome job organizing the whole trip. Hopefully I'll get to go on another one in the future!
